Voor de inwoners van Umm al-Khair is het treiteren door kolonisten helaas niets nieuws, maar deze dreiging is ronduit rampzalig. Het aanvallen van boeren en het bedreigen van hun toegang tot drinkwater is onacceptabel. Zoals Awdah benadrukt: “Water is een recht voor iedereen. Niemand heeft het recht om het anderen te onthouden.”
De realiteit in Palestina wordt vaak beschreven als zijnde complex. Dit resulteert in de oorverdovende stilte van velen. Het is niet nodig een expert te zijn om te begrijpen dat het verlies van toegang tot (drink)water verschrikkelijk is. Niemand kan zonder water, dus ook de Palestijnen niet.
Awdah vraagt zich af:
“Is het niet genoeg om ons aan te vallen, onze huizen te slopen, elektriciteit te ontnemen en land te confisqueren?”
“Hoe lang nog tot de kolonisten onze lucht afsluiten? Als ze het zouden kunnen, zouden ze het zo doen.”
Awdah’s posts maken ons duidelijk dat we te midden van de toenemende spanningen in Gaza de situatie in de Westelijke Jordaanoever niet uit het oog mogen verliezen. Het gaat niet alleen om Hamas, zoals vaak beweerd wordt door het Israëlische regime, maar om een poging tot systematische etnische zuivering van het Palestijnse volk.

Recently, a group of settlers attacked farmers, threatening them not only with physical violence but also with shutting down the village's only water network, a crucial lifeline for its residents.
For the inhabitants of Umm al-Khair, harassment by settlers is unfortunately nothing new, but this threat is considered “a real disaster”. Attacking shepherds and jeopardizing their access to drinking water is unacceptable. As Awdah emphasizes: “Water is a right for everyone. No one has the right to withhold it from the other.”
The reality in Palestine is often described as complex. This results in the deafening silence of many. It is not necessary to be an expert to understand that the loss of access to (drinking) water is terrible. No one can do without water, and Palestinians are no exception.
Awdah wonders:
“Isn’t it enough to attack us? Isn’t it enough to demolish our homes? Isn’t it enough to prevent us from obtaining electricity? Isn’t it enough to confiscate our lands? … I really wonder when the settlers will cut off our air? If they can, they will.”
Awdah’s posts make it clear that amidst the escalating tensions in Gaza, we must not lose sight of the situation in the West Bank. It is not just about Hamas, as often claimed by Israel, but rather an attempt at systematic ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people as a whole.
